The origin of the French word for cork, “bouchon”, dates back to the period when inns serving wine outside mealtimes were indicated by a wisp of straw (“bouchon” in French) hanging from their signs. This marked coaching inns where mâchon, a snack composed of charcuterie accompanied by a good wine, was served.

Today these warm, friendly places continue the tradition. In Lyon no one ever misses a meal – impossible when there is such a wide choice of eating-places: speciality restaurants, counter cafes, great tables, pubs, and so on!
